Shishapangma 01 01 Kangchenjunga 01 04 Mountain Flight Shishapangma Long View Shishapangma, the 14th highest mountain in the world at 8012m, shines in the early morning sun from Kathmandu’s Mountain flight. The steep and treacherous southwest face is in shadow on the left. The north face is just visible in the sun on the right. On the far right the pointy rocky peak is Phola Gangchen (7716m), first climbed in 1981, and to its left is Shishapangma’s East face. Shishapangma 01 02 Kangchenjunga 01 05 Mountain Flight Shishapangma Close Up Here is a close-up of the summit area of Shishapangma, the 14th highest mountain in the world at 8012m, shining in the early morning sun from Kathmandu’s Mountain flight. The steep and treacherous southwest face is in shadow on the left. The north face is just visible in the sun on the right. The peak to the right of the sloping long sunny ridge in the middle right is Pungpa Ri (7445m), first climbed in 1982. On the far left below Pungpa Ri with its west face in shadow and the east face fully lit is Nyanang Ri (7071m), called the Rock Tooth. Shishapangma 01 03 Tibet Kailash 03 Nyalam to Peiku Tso 01 Shishapangma The next morning we felt better and, lo and behold, it was sunny - yes the sun does shine in the monsoon months. After driving about 30km from Nyalam, I looked back and saw a beautiful view of the east face of Shishapangma come partly visible. The summits of both Shishapangma and Phola Gangchen are in the clouds. The ridge visible on the right of the photo is to the right of Phola Gangchen. Shishapangma 02 01 Nasa ISS006-E-13650 From Above Nasa has some excellent photos of Shishapangma and the surrounding mountains. ISS006-E-13650 was taken on 2002-12-28. Peiku Tso is in the upper right and Shishapangma in the centre. The trekking route from Nyalam to the Southwest face is clearly visible in the lower left. Shishapangma 02 02 Nasa ISS008-E-6355 From West Nasa ISS008-E-6355 was taken on 2003-11-28 from the east. Shishapangma is in the lower centre. The valley towards Nyalam goes up in the left. The valley from Nyalam to the Southwest face goes from left to right in the centre, with Jugal Himal mountains Phurbi Ghyachu (6658m) and Lenpo Gang (Big White Peak 7083m) at the beginning of the valley. Shishapangma 02 03 Nasa ISS008-E-6241 Long View From East Nasa ISS008-E-6241 was taken on 2003-11-26 from the west. Shishapangma 02 04 Nasa ISS008-E-13316 Low Angle From East Nasa ISS008-E-13316 was taken on 2004-01-28 from the east. This is a superb lower angle image of Shishapangma and the surrounding mountains, with Peiku Tso in the lower right. Shishapangma is the mountain with what looks like a dark triangular rock face vertically in the centre and horizontally just to the left of centre, with Phola Ganchen (7661m) on the ridge to the left. Shishapangma 02 05 Nasa ISS006-E-13651 Shishapangma to Cho Oyu Nasa ISS006-E-13651 was taken on 2002-12-28. Shishapangma is in the upper right corner and Cho Oyu is in the lower left corner. To the left of Cho Oyu is the Gokyo Valley in Nepal. The Labuche Kang massif is in the lower centre near the lake, about half-way between Cho Oyu and Shishapangma. Gauri Shankar (7143m) is on the long left-to-right ridge in shadow to the left of centre, with Menlungtse (7181m), the spiky peak just below it.
