Makalu Photo Gallery - Best Photos - Makalu South Face, Makalu Southwest Face, Makalu West Pillar and Makalu West Face from Nepal, Crossing the East and West Cols, Makalu from Gokyo Ri, Makalu North Face from Kama Valley in Tibet.

I traveled to Makalu Base Camp in Nepal and over the East and West Cols in 2009, and Makalu North Face in Tibet in 1998.

9 3 Makalu North Face From Shao La In Tibet Makalu’s knife-edge northeast ridge looked imposing from the Shao La, but this was the final stage of the first ascent by the French in 1955. Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy (both members of the French ascent of Annapurna in 1950) climbed from the Makalu La, across and up the north face, reaching the summit on May 15th.

8 3 Makalu Summit Early Morning From Makalu Base Camp South We didn’t leave Makalu Base Camp South until after 11:00 since it was going to be short trek. As I waited, the sun continued its western swing and slowly lit up the Makalu Southwest Face highlighting the ridges much better than the evening light.

10 1 First Rays Of Morning Sun Hit Climbing Sherpa Palde and Jerome Ryan Trekking On Glacier Towards East Col Although we were on the move an hour before sunrise at 5am, the other tour group had already left camp even earlier. I quickly fell into my trekking rhythm climbing on the glacier, walking slowly but continuously, counting my steps, and passed the trekkers from the other group. Climbing Sherpa Palde and Jerome Ryan pause to enjoy the warmth of the first rays of the sun.

10 10 Jerome Ryan Climbing Down East Col Finally it was my turn to grab the fixed rope and descend the 125m 40-45 degree snow and rock face. Palde and Pemba Rinjii cut steps for me to make it easier and safer. The only real danger was falling rocks and ice kicked loose by the other group’s porters descending at the same time.
