Iceland 05 02 Stong Longhouse Excavation  [15 of 30]

Stong was the home of a chieftain named Gaukur Trandilsson until Mount Hekla erupted in 1104, smothering much of the Pjorsardalur valley under ash and pumice. Stong was excavated in 1939 and illustrates a typical Viking homestead, a longhouse forming the main hall.
