I could clearly see the famous second and third steps leading the normal route to the summit. To the left of the summit area is the Great (Norton) Couloir reached by Edward Norton in 1924. To the right of the summit is the Hornbein Couloir, named after Thomas Hornbein who climbed it on the 1963 American Expedition. From the summit, the West Ridge plummets at an angle of 45 degrees before meeting the less steep long West Shoulder.

10 Rongbuk Guesthouse The Rongbuk Monastery Guesthouse is the inexpensive option at Rongbuk with basic beds in unheated rooms. Jeeps and buses are lined up to take tourists up to Everest Base Camp Village where you have to switch to local buses for the final leg to Base Camp.

12 Rongbuk Monastery Side View The Rongbuk Monastery (4976m) was founded in 1902, and was the largest monastery of the region with over 500 monks and nuns. After being destroyed in the Cultural Revolution, the monastery was renovated starting in 1983.

14 Rongbuk Monastery Inside Entrance, Courtyard, Entrance To Chapels On Left And Right After passing through the Rongbuk Monastery entrance gate you pass a kiln and pass through the main gate into a courtyard with a gong above for calling the monks to prayers before reaching the main building with the main chapel above on the left and two more chapels on the right, one above and one below.

15 Rongbuk Monastery Main Chapel Entrance With Four Guardian Kings Paintings of the four Guardian Kings are outside the Rongbuk Monastery main chapel with Virudhaka, the blue guardian of the south holding a sword to the left of the door and Dhritarashtra, the white guardian of the east playing a lute to the right of the door. On the wall to the far left is Virupaksa, the red guardian of the west holding a stupa and on the wall to the far right is the orange-faced Vaishravana (also called Jambhala), the guardian of the north holding a victory banner and a jewel-spitting mongoose.

17 Rongbuk Monastery Main Chapel Wall Painting Of Lord Of The Dance And His Consort In Yabyum The main painting on the left wall of the Rongbuk Monastery main chapel is the Lord Of The Dance, which is part of the Mani Rimdu festival. He has two arms and holds a lotus in his left hand and a garland of flowers in his right. His consort is seated on his lap in yabyum. She is a red dakini with four arms and is sometimes called Secret Wisdom Mother. She holds a chopper in her right hand behind his head and a skull cup in her upper left hand, a khatvanga in her lower left hand and a sword in her upper right hand.

19 Rongbuk Monastery Main Chapel Buddhist Holy Books And Wall Paintings Mahottara Chemchok Heruka And Vajrakilaya Dorje Phurba At the back wall of the Rongbuk Monastery main chapel are the Buddhist sacred texts. On the upper right is Mahottara (Tib.Chemchok) Heruka who has 21 heads and 42 hands, while his consort has nine heads and 18 hands. On the lower left is Vajrakilaya / Vajrakila (Tib. Dorje Phurba), one of the eight Herukas who has three faces, six hands, four legs and wide outstretched wings behind. Vajrakilaya’s two principal hands hold the three-sided kila (dagger or phurba) pointed downward, his two right hands each hold a vajra, his upper left hand makes a mudra, and his middle left hand holds a trident. His consort Diptachakra has two arms, one around Vajrakilaya’s neck and the other holding a skull cup. On the lower right is a monk that I do not recognize.
