Everest Photo Gallery - Dingboche And Chukung Ri

I trekked from Lukla to Dingboche in 1997. I also trekked back from Gorak Shep over the Kongma La to Dingboche in 2008.

The trail goes up the flat valley before turning right and climbing to Duglha. The high trail from Dingboche is visible above Pheriche.

17 Dingboche Guest House 1997 - Outside Shower After lunch at the Dingboche Guest House, I decided to take the lodge up on their sign for a ‘hot shower’. After a few minutes, I saw the young caretaker boy walk from the kitchen with a large kettle. He ascended a few stairs next to the shower and poured the hot water into a large plastic drum. After a few more kettles, it was ready. I walked across to the shower, took my clothes off, and enjoyed my two minutes of ecstasy.

19 Dingboche - Ama Dablam Pokes Out From Clouds From Above Dingboche I had hoped to look down on Pheriche, but the clouds and fog rolled in. Ama Dablam poked out of the clouds for a few seconds, looking very different than the views from Pangboche.

20 Dingboche - Taweche East Face And Cholatse In Early Morning Sun The weather in Dingboche was clear in the morning, with the best view of the east face of Taweche / Taboche (6542m). Cholatse is on the right. The first ascent of Taweche / Taboche was made on April 15, 1974 by Louis Dubost and Paul Gendre on a French expedition. The direct Northeast Face of Taweche / Taboche was climbed in winter by Jeff Lowe and John Roskelley alpine-style during a ten day push in February, 1989. They reached the summit on February 13. The route follows the deep vertical cleft up the center of the face. The climb is documented in the book

It was named Island Peak in 1952 by Eric Shipton since it looked like an island in a sea of ice. Island Peak was first climbed in 1953 by a British team as a training exercise in preparation for Mount Everest. Tenzing Norgay was one of the members of this first ascent team.

25 Jerome Ryan Climbs From Chukung To Lower Chukung Ri With Nuptse And Lhotse South Face The trail from, Dingboche is pleasant towards Chukung (4730m) for what I planned to be a leisurely day off. When I got there, a woman pointed along a path that crossed the small village. I obeyed and before I knew it, I was starting to ascend Chukung Ri (5550m). I looked back at the small village, pondering whether to go back or continue on up. I decided to continue, and was alone as I huffed and puffed up the hill. I got slower and slower and had to rest often, bent over to suck in as much oxygen as possible. I sat down on a rock and daydreamed, my mind wandering back to home and my physical preparations. When I got to the col between the two Chukung Ri peaks, I was very tired. I decided to climb the lower of the two peaks to the left. I climbed up and up walking along a snowy ridge. When I got to the 5417m summit at 12:30 I was ecstatic. Jerome Ryan on Lower Chukung Ri with Nuptse - Lhotse South Face behind.
