The view was magnificent from Kala Pattar. The weather was perfectly clear, and I was surprised at how much more detail there is on the Everest Southwest Face than in photos. I could clearly see some of the gullies that the Chris Bonnington team had climbed in 1975. I looked longingly at the South Col, the dip between Everest and Lhotse.
