1998-1 Lhotse and Everest Kangshung Face In October 1998 I trekked through the Karta Valley to the East Kangshung Face of Everest. It was a beautiful trek and the east face is dramatically different from the South-West and North faces. Here is a view of the snow clad east faces of Lhotse and Everest.

1998-3 Everest North Face and Rongbuk Monastery After trekking to the East Kangshung face of Everest, we drove to the North Face and had a clear wonderful view. This is the face that defeated George Mallory three times in the early 1920s.

03 Mount Everest North Face and Rongbuk Monastery Morning Everest North Face glistens in the morning sun with Rongbuk Monastery (4976m) in the foreground in October 2010. The mountain in front of Everest is Changtse (7583m, Everest north peak) and the long Everest West Ridge leads to the right with Nuptse (7861m) behind at the far right.

Lukla To Namche Bazaar 06 Plane Ready To Descend Lukla Airstrip With Karyolung, Lukla, And Nupla The excited trekkers quickly exited the plane and were encouraged to leave quickly by the whistle-blowing policemen. A few minutes later the weary but happy trekkers who had finished their trek jumped into the airplane and off they went back to Kathmandu. Nupla is in the background. The airport in Lukla was renamed in 2008 to the Tenzing-Hillary Airport. The bituman runway is 527m long, the width is 20m, and the runway incline is almost 20%.

10 Everest And South Col From Kala Pattar The view was magnificent from Kala Pattar. The weather was perfectly clear, and I was surprised at how much more detail there is on the Everest Southwest Face than in photos. I could clearly see some of the gullies that the Chris Bonnington team had climbed in 1975. I looked longingly at the South Col, the dip between Everest and Lhotse.
