Dubai Photo Gallery - 3. Burj Al Arab

In July and August 2006, we traveled to Dubai, Mount Kailash and Guge Kingdom in Tibet, Muscat, Iceland and a brief stop in London.

Dubai 07 Burj Al Arab 01 Outside From Medinat The Burg Al Arab, the world’s first seven-star hotel, is the current icon for Dubai. The hotel has a 200m-high lobby and an underwater restaurant, among other facilities. A bar, restaurant and helipad extend from side to side at the top of the building. The design is supposed to evoke a sail of an ultramodern catamaran. Everything that looks gold is gold, with approximately 8,000 square metres of 22-carat gold leaf used within the interior design. Here’s a view from the Madinat Jumeirah.

Dubai 07 Burj Al Arab 02 Outside From Entrance Bridge Built on an artificial island 280m offshore from the Jumeirah Beach Hotel, the 321m-high Burj Al Arab hotel is home to 202 two-story suites, each with its own butler. A translucent fiberglass wall shields the desert sun during the day and serves as a screen for a light show at night. Here’s the view of the Burj Al Arab from the entrance bridge.

Dubai 07 Burj Al Arab 04 Taking Golf Buggy To Entrance From the security entrance, we took a golf buggy across the bridge to the entrance, with the Madinat Jumeirah, styled to resemble an ancient Arabian citadel, in the distance. Security guards defend the building’s sole entrance, and turn away anyone without a reservation for a room or a meal. Probably the cheapest option is afternoon tea, which we did.

Dubai 07 Burj Al Arab 07 Escalator To The Mezzanine As we took the escalator from the entrance to the mezzanine, we were flanked by a glass walled aquarium holding exotic fish, and in the centre by a waterfall that splashes down a giant staircase. The Sahn Eddar restaurant where we had tea is visible in the upper left.

Dubai 07 Burj Al Arab 08 Entrance Fountain The Cascade waterfall, situated between the escalators leading to Sahn Eddar, is based on an Oscar-winning concept combining finely atomised water with fibre optics to produce a unique glowing kaleidoscope effect. As water and fog flow downward through its steps filled with glass stones, arches of water, illuminated with coloured fibre optics, jump across in choreographed movements.

Dubai 07 Burj Al Arab 09 Atrium Ceiling From Mezzanine From the mezzanine at the Burj Al Arab, we stared at the largest atrium in the world, 180m high, crowned by a triangular ceiling.

Dubai 07 Burj Al Arab 12 Enjoying Tea at Sahn Edder on the Mezzanine Sahn Eddar is located at the base of the world's tallest atrium. Warm and welcoming tones, mosaic and marble flooring, and torch lighting provide a beautiful backdrop. We lingered over delicious afternoon tea with jam and scones.

Dubai 07 Burj Al Arab 18 Marble Floor Mosaic Over 30 different types of marble were used throughout the Hotel. The marble used in the walls and flooring is Statutario marble, the same stone used by Michaelangelo to create his sculpture masterpieces. Here is an interesting piece of mosaic floor tile forming circles in blue, red and blue, and then yellow sun spirals, directly under the chandelier.
