Cuba Havana Centro Photo Gallery

Havana Centro is a short walk from Old Havana Vieja and contains more sights than Old Havana. The Parque Central area contains the Washington-like Capitolio Capital Building, the Gran Teatro de la Habana, the Fábrica de Tabacos Partagás building, and many hotels including the Hotel NH Parque Central, Hotel Telegrafo and Hotel Inglaterra. The Prado connecting Parque Central to the Malacon contains the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Museo de la Revolución.

12 Cuba - Havana - Jose Marti International Airport We landed at Jose Marti International Airport in Havana, quickly got through customs and immigration, and changed money into $CUCs. On the way we noticed that our very own Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretian helped open the new airport terminal with Fidel Castro in 1998. Canada is a leading investor in Cuba, and Canada sends more tourists to Cuba's beaches than any other nation.

13 Cuba - Havana - Highway and Streets On Way From Airport To Havana The first things I noticed on the ride from the Havana Jose Marti International Airport to Havana Centro were how empty the highway and roads were, and the beautiful old American cars.

37 Cuba - Havana Centro - Capitolio, Gran Teatro de la Habana The Capitolio in Havana Centro is similar to the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC. It was initiated by Cuba's US-backed dictator Gerardo Machado in 1926 and took 5000 workers three years, two months and 20 days to build at a cost of around US$17 million. The Capitolio was the seat of government in Cuba until after the Cuban Revolution in 1959, and is now home to the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

Highway distances between Havana and all sites in Cuba are calculated from this point. The original diamond, said to have belonged to Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and have been sold to the Cuban state by a Turkish merchant, was stolen on 25 March 1946 and mysteriously returned to the President, Ramón Grau San Martin, on 2 June 1946. It was replaced in El Capitolio by a replica in 1973.

In front of the building is an SAU-100 tank used by Castro during the 1961 Battle of the Bay of Pigs.
