Annapurna Sanctuary Photo Gallery from October 2002

Modi Khola Valley From Annapurna Sanctuary Lt.-Col. Jimmy Roberts, an officer in the gurkhas and a very experienced mountaineer, was the first European to penetrate the Annapurna Sanctuary. Its only exit is the Modi Khola, a narrow gorge leading down into the foothills and eventually to the plains of India.

Chomrong From Sinuwa I left Annapurna Base Camp at 7:40, descending rapidly past Machapuchare Base Camp at 8:13, Deurali at 9:18, Himalaya Hotel at 10:13, Dovan at 11:00, to Bamboo at 11:45, where I stopped for a Coke and chocolate bar. I left Bamboo at 12:05, reached Upper Sinuwa at 13:15, Lower Sinuwa at 13:40, the Chomrong Khola at 14:05, and then brutally up a couple of thousand stone steps to the Himalayan View in Chomrong, arriving at 15:00. Phew!

Looking Down Modi Khola Valley From Chomrong With New Bridge In Lower Left I left Chomrong (2210m) at 15:05 and continued down the Modi Khola Valley going down, down, down to cross the river. It seems like such a pity that I had to climb up to Chomrong, only to have to descend to the river again. My pack was uneven and I struggled all the way to New Bridge (1340m), arriving at 16:40, and staying at he Hiunchuli Guest House.

Hiunchuli Close Up Early Morning From Past New Bridge After leaving New Bridge, I looked back to see Hiunchuli glisten in the early morning sun. Hiunchuli (6441m) was first climbed on October 10, 1971 by Americans Craig Anderson, Peter Cross, Jim Richards, John Skow, and Lane Smith.

Machapuchare Close Up From Lower Modi Khola Valley As I trekked from New Bridge to Naya Pul, I turned around and had a great view of Machapuchare.

Machapuchare From Lower Modi Khola Valley I left New Bridge (1340m) at 6:05 and hiked up and down the banks of the Modi Khola to Beehive at 7:00, thru terraced fields with excellent views of Machapuchare, to Syauli Bazaar (1140m) at 8:25, to Birethanti (1000m) at 9:50, to Naya Pul at 10:15, finishing with a steep climb up to the road.

Kathmandu From Air My Cosmic Air flight took only 30 minutes from Pokhara to Kathmandu. Kathmandu is Nepal's capital and largest city, situated at an altitude of around 1400m. The immensity of the Kathmandu Valley is evident as you fly into Tribhuvan International Airport, with Kathmandu stretching into the distance.
